What Parents Must Know Before Feeding their Baby?


As we all know mother’s milk is the most important food for babies overall development. It will provide all the required nutrition for babies growth and for strengthening the immune system. It is considered as a balanced food.

Breast milk should be fed compulsory for two years from the day of birth. This will ensure the baby gets sufficient nutrients for physical and mental growth. Breast milk is considered to be the first food of babies. After 6 months, along with breast milk babies can be fed with soft cooked food. Before 6 months no food other than breast milk should be used and this is also the suggestion by expert doctors. For proper development of the child it is crucial to feed external food in the liquid form like fruit juice and cooked cereals once child becomes 6 months old.

Anna Prashana

In India, starting to feed external food to baby is initiated by an auspicious ritual called “Anna Prashana”. During Anna Prashana, the infant made to taste all types of tastes like sweet, salt and spicy in very small quantities. It is believed that the baby learns different tastes and when grows will not deny any tastes. Anna Prashana literally means “Feeding Food” or “Eating Food”. It remains as a very important ceremony in India. After this ceremony, baby can now be fed with different types of foods which should be easily digestable. This samskara is performed once baby croses his first 6 months as the baby is now be able to digest the food properly.

To start with, giving fruits in liquid form will provide the necessary IRON and other nutrition’s required for the baby growth. Feeding Pomegranate juice 2 to 3 spoons a day is helpful in maintaining the required hemoglobin in the body. In any way it is better to avoid salt and sugar in the baby’s food till 1 year.

Hygine & Cleanliness

Before following any specific food practice, it is very crucial to maintain cleanliness through out the process. In food method for babies cleanliness plays an important role. The utensils used for preparation of baby food like bowl, plate and spoons should be properly washed and sterilized for 5 to 6 mins. And then should be used for preparation of food and feeding purpose. This will ensure no harmful microbes will cause any infections.

We need to understand that the body of child is very sensitive and any minor infections will cause major health issues. So we need to be very cautious about the cleanliness. It is not just about cleanliness of utensils, even the drinking water should be filtered and pasteurized before giving it to baby. Also before feeding food, parents should make sure their hands are clean and tidy.

Raagi koozh (raagi pal)

Ingredients and preparation

  • Take 2 tbsp of whole ragi grains.
  • Now wash and rinse it twise to make sure it is clean.
  • Take a small vessel, add water and soak it overnight for about 8 hours.
  • Grind the soaked raagi with water to extract ragi milk.
  • Extracted ragi milk should be filtered and pour it to a pan.
  • Now in low flame stir it continuously for about 5 mins.
  • After removing it from pan add the required water to dilute the consistency. We can add fresh apple puree to make it more delicious and healthy
  • Serve it fresh to the baby.

Apple puree

Ingredients and preparation

  • Cut and slice an apple
  • Half apple is enough in the beginning for baby.
  • Steam it for 15 mins in medium flame.
  • After cooked, it changes it’s color to yellow and becomes soft.
  • Peel the skin or scoop it out for grinding.
  • Grind it by adding little quantity of water.
  • And serve it within half an hour of preparation.

Carrot puree

Ingredients and preparation

  • Take 1 peeled carrot. Peeling helps to remove the dust and mud above the carrot.
  • Cut this carrot into small pieces and remove the center part.
  • Add a glass of water and pressure cook for 5 whistles.
  • After pressure cook and cooled, then transfer it into the mixer jar or grinder , while grinding add little quantity of water to it.
  • Now healthy carrot puree is ready for serving.
  • It is rich in vitamin A, which helps baby to have great skin.

Daal puree

Ingredients and preparation

  • Take toor daal 2 tbsp.
  • Wash it twice without soaking for long.
  • Take pressure cooker, add this washed toor dal with garlic, jeera, a glass of water to it.
  • Pressure cook it for 5 whistles and cool it down to room temperature.
  • Now add ghee and grind it to make it’s paste.
  • Add small quantity of water to dilute this paste.
  • Toor dal puree is ready to serve.
  • Toor dal is rich in protein and it can be combined with mashed rice.

Apple Banana porridge

Ingredients and preparation

  • Take 1 apple, wash it properly and peel the skin.
  • Chop it roughly and pressure cook with 1 – 1 & 1/2 cups of water and cook until 4 whistles.
  • Turn of the heat and allow it to cool down.
  • Now add the cooked apple into mixer jar, add banana pieces required quantity and grind it to make puree.
  • Apple Banana puree is ready to serving it to baby.

Rice and Moong daal Poridge

Ingredients and preparation

  • Take 2 tbsp rice and 2 tbsp moong daal, wash it & soak it for 2 hours.
  • Take a strainer and wash it thoroughly.
  • And this soaked rice will be spread in to the pure cloth until it becomes dry.
  • Follow the same process for moong daal, but it takes less time for soaking compared to rice.
  • After 1 hour keep the moong daal in a separate plate.
  • And then take a pan, heat it in medium flame and then fry the moong daal for removing the moisture.
  • And continue frying until it becomes light brown.
  • Follow the same process for rice and fry it until it becomes light brown.
  • Now grind these two ingredients separately, make smooth powder of it and place it in a dry glass container.
  • While serving, take 2 tbsp from both rice and moong daal powder in a bowl, mix them well, add required quantity of water and mix it well until it become soft paste.
  • We can make three combinations of this food like rice and moong daal powder with water, only rice powder with water and only moong daal powder with water as per the requirement.

It is very important to plan the everyday food timing for babies. Rather than giving random food, it is wise to properly plan what has to be given in the morning, afternoon lunch and evening food. But one thing to be kept in mind, babies may not follow timing or all food may not be liked by all babies. So we need to understand when they eat, what they like and we shouldn’t force in any case as every baby body nature is not the same.

Here we will explore some of the lunch ideas for babies.

Green Gram rice

  • Take 3 tbsp of green gram and soak it in water for 4 to 5 hours.
  • Now add this soaked green grams into a pressure cooker, add 1 to 2 garlic cloves, a pinch of cumin seeds and 1 cup of water.
  • Cook this up to 4 to 5 whistles.
  • Take 2 to 3 tbsp of cooked rice and mash it well.
  • To this mashed rice add the boiled green gram and mix and mash these two.
  • We can also add 1 tbsp of ghee.
  • Now, Green Gram rice is ready for serving!

Rasam and rice

  • Take 1/4 tbsp cumin seeds.
  • 1 to 2 pepper seeds and 2 garlic cloves.
  • Add few curry leaves and coriander leaves, crush or grind them
  • Now mix them all and grind them coarsely.
  • Add some ghee to the pan, add grinded mix and to this add a pinch of hing, and a pinch of turmeric powder and sout it well.
  • Add 1 small chopped tomato and add salt as required.
  • Add 1 cup of water and bring this to boil for few mins.
  • Rasam is ready to serve.
  • Take required amount of cooked rice and mash it, add rasam to it and again mash it to feed it to your baby.

Spinach and rice

  • Add half a teaspoon of ghee to a cooker or pan.
  • To this add 1 garlic piece and small piece of onion.
  • And add half chopped tomato, 1 cup of chopped spinach (wash spinach thoroughly with lukewarm water).
  • add some cumin seeds.
  • Add 1 tbsp of boiled rice, 1 tbsp of split green gram (wash them with water).
  • To this add a pinch of pepper powder.
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Add a cup of water to it and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles.
  • Now mash it after cooling it down.
  • Spinach rice is ready to serve.

Mixed Veg Daal rice

  • Take 2 tbsp of par boiled rice (thoroughly cleaned in water).
  • To this add split pigon pea or toor daal(cleaned in water).
  • Add a pinch of cumin seeds.
  • Take 1 small carrot and 1 small beans, 1 small potato. and add a 1 small tomato.
  • To this add pinch of turmeric powder and pinch of salt as required (avoid salt for baby less than 1 yr).
  • Add cup of water to this and add 1 garlic piece.
  • Pressure cook this for 4 to 5 whistles and allow to cool it down.
  • Blend or mash this and transfer it into a small bowl.
  • Mixed veg and daal rice ready to serve to the baby.

Curd rice

  • Take 3 tbsp of cooked rice and mash it well.
  • to this add curd and again mash it.
  • Add a pinch of salt if necessary.
  • Transfer it into a bowl.
  • Delicious curd rice is ready to serve to the baby.

Potato rice

  • Take 1 tbsp of rice.
  • Take 1 tbsp of toor daal, split pigon pea and wash it thoroughly with water.
  • To this add 1 small potato and 1 garlic piece, 1 small piece chopped onion, half a tomato, a pinch of cumin seeds. a pinch of turmeric, pepper and cup of water. Pressure cook this mix for 4 to 5 whistles
  • Smash it and is now ready to serve to the baby!

Raagi, Green Gram, Chickpea and Wheat Porridge

  • Take 1 cup of Raagi, Green Gram 1/4 Cup, Chickpea 1/4 cup and wheat grains 1/4 cup
  • Wash them thoroughly
  • Keep them separately in water for 7 to 8 hours
  • Now filter all water and tie each of them separately with clean cotton clothes and keep them for 1 to 2 days for sprouting.
  • After 1 to 2 days, we need to take them out and keep them separately outside for sun drying till it dries well
  • Now we need to make sure all the water content has dried up.
  • Now mix them all and make fine powder out of them.
